The FDA approved topotecan on May 29th 1996 for the treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer, and then later in December 1998, for the treatment of small cell lung cancer.

Following this, in June 2006, topotecan in combination with cisplatin was approved for advanced cervical cancer that cannot be treated with radiation therapy or surgery.
